Mississippi Lawmakers Consider Ibogaine Treatment To Fight Addictions

Mississippi House and Senate lawmakers held a joint public hearing recently to hear from witnesses about their experiences with Ibogaine.

The goal of the hearing was to determine whether a bill should be introduced in the Mississippi Legislature next session to allow FDA trials of a drug said to be able to cure people who are suffering from addiction, PTSD or trauma.

State Representative Sam Creekmore IV said Mississippi is facing a mental health and substance abuse crisis, and that people struggling with addictions have seen good results with Ibogaine:

“I’ve talked to Mississippi veterans who’ve had to go to Mexico to be treated … It completely rewires your brain. I can’t explain the science behind it, but after this 48 to 72 hour period, the withdrawal symptoms are gone.”

Claire Durst, a registered nurse, said:

“The treatments we have right now are 25% effective. Studies that have been conducted show ibogaine is 85% effective.”

Ben Bush, a veteran, also added that he went to Mexico in 2021 to take Ibogaine:

A lot of physical pain went away. All my all my mental pain went away, and life’s great now. So, it literally changed my life”

This hearing was definitely a promising sign, but Creekmore said that while Mississippi lawmakers need more evidence about Ibogaine before working on a bill.
