Minnesota Task Force Recommends Magic Mushroom Decriminalization
Earlier this year, a Minnesota task force released a report recommending the decriminalization of magic mushrooms.
The Minnesota Legislature had established the Psychedelic Medicine Task Force (“PMTF”) in 2023 to advise it on the legal, medical, and policy issues associated with the potential legalization of psychedelic medicine in the State of Minnesota. And the PMTF consist of 23 members that represent areas of expertise such as public health policy, clinicians, and veterans with mental health conditions
While the report also urges funding for research into LSD and MDMA, they were not recommended for decriminalization and clinical trials.
And although the task force is in favor of decriminalizing possession of magic mushrooms, it also stopped short of recommending that Minnesota legalize retail sales.
More specifically, the report makes these 4 primary recommendations:
1) Removing criminal penalties for psychedelic medicines
2) Creating a state-regulated clinical program
3) Funding for more research
4) Adult regulated use of psilocybin-containing mushrooms
Interestingly, the report also notes that “while many advocates want to see an adult-regulated use model, the broader public and government acceptance of such a program is not at the same level as it is for adult-regulated cannabis programs as of Fall 2024.”
In any case, it’s another step in the right direction along the path of full plant medicine legalization.
