How Ayahuasca Heals
Popularly known around the world as a shamanic gateway to the spirit world, Ayahuasca has traditionally been used for thousands of years as a healing medicine also. Made using two indigenous plants Banisteriopsis caapi & Psychotria viridis, Ayahuasca works by promoting massive mental and physical healing responses in the human body.
While different for everybody, no one is ever not deeply affected by Ayahuasca. In like regard, few if any people ever come away from an Ayahuasca ceremony not feeling more spiritually and vitally restored than they did before arriving.
How San Pedro Heals
A lesser-known but no less effective healing plant is a cactus called San Pedro. Like Ayahuasca, it has been utilized by Shamans for many thousands of years in shamanic healing ceremonies, and there have been numerous reports of its healing power for cancer, diabetes, and paralysis, as well as for emotional and psychological problems such as depression and grief.
The Biblical Saint Peter, whom the plant was named after, is said to be the holder of the keys to Heaven, and so the name represents an opening of a gateway for us to enter into a dimension where we can experience the world as divine.
Participants are said to be ‘set free from matter’ and ‘engage in flight through cosmic regions… transported across time and distance in a rapid and safe fashion’.
One shaman described its effects as “First, a dreamy state… then great visions, a clearing of all the faculties… then detachment, a type of visual force inclusive of the sixth sense, the telepathic state of transmitting oneself across time and matter, like a removal of thoughts to a distant dimension.”
In this way, San Pedro is said to remove our negative beliefs so the positive ones shine through and we can heal ourselves.

January 29, 2019 at 4:35 pmWords can’t express how amazing my experience was at this retreat. From the moment you arrive at their property, Ken and Sun of Ayahuasca in Ecuador make you feel like you are part of their family. Their hospitality and the care they put into every aspect of the retreat put you at such ease so all you have to think about is the healing you came for.
They keep the number of people in each retreat small, only 4 others in mine. We all got along really well and It was really nice to connect with each other and share our experiences as we processed the medicine.
Ken and Suns home is beautiful. Our room was comfortable with our own bathroom. I enjoyed waking up to the birds chirping everyday. The meals were amazing. So much fresh fruit and veggies! They really take your health and nutrition into account.
During the ceremonies they take such good care of you. The Choza where you take the medicine at is in the most perfect beautiful setting, along a river and surrounded by nature.
I truly cannot say enough about how amazing my experience was there. Taking the medicine was one thing but staying with Sun and Ken and feeling their care and love added immensely to the entire experience. Its nerve-wracking trying to pick a place over the internet when you never know what your going to get but you will not be disappointed with choosing Ayahuasca in Ecuador!
Happy healing!

August 18, 2018 at 2:43 pmWhat an incredible experience! Being nervous about my first ever experience with something like Ayahuasca or San Pedro I arrived unsure and a little worried. That didn’t last long, within minutes I felt like I had arrived home. Both Ken and Sun welcomed me with open arms and provided me with comfy lodging in their home.
Sun cooked amazing food throughout the experience and took such good care of the group. There was four participants in the group and for both of my Aya experiences there were three helpers and Alberto the Sharman. All had beautiful warm hearts and really looked after our best interests. It was a supportive and loving atmosphere where I truly felt at ease. The surroundings were amazing next to the river and on the last day during the San Pedro experience I enjoyed going for a swim in the cool water.
Could not recommend more highly.

August 16, 2018 at 6:45 pmWhen I first arrived in Maccas, Ken and Sun welcomed me with open arms and open heart. Their home really felt like my home away from home. I was worried about the diet and food is a great love of mine, their hospitality exceeded my expectations. Everything was taken care of so I could just appreciate the down time to work on myself with tai chi and meditation, the bed with super comfy and they explain the healing process extremely well. The Shaman Alberto is a gentle, kind soul and makes the experience a very pleasure full experience. Accompanied by helpers and a good great set and setting which is most important for a psychedelics. I would high recommend them for anyone considering trying the medicine.

July 31, 2018 at 9:58 amMy wife and I were called (separately) to interact with Madre Ayahuasca in July. It was such an obvious and urgent message that there was little debate as to “IF” we should go, but “where” we should go. I am the survivor of an aggressive Lymphoma, and have been in a slippery recovery for more than a year. A walnut sized tumor has stubbornly remained on my neck, and has concerned us that the cancer was trying to return. From the beginning of the cancer journey, we shunned all mainstream treatments. Our decision to pursue a plant-based approach was made all the easier by the fact that my wife and I are the first American couple to ever graduate from the Advanced Ayurveda Therapy course in Tamil Nadu, India…the birthplace of the ancient science of plant medicine. My course of strategy was all about proper diet…and LOTS of THC-intensive cannabis. This worked extraordinarily well, except for that last bit of tumor (which had been reduced from the size of a very large grapefruit to that walnut mentioned earlier). So when Ayahuasca called out to both of us, our search for authentic healing began.
Peru is well known for its Ayahuasca traditions, and we had traveled to Peru years earlier. But when it came down to it, we chose Ecuador because of the due-diligence that the Ecuadorian government itself does on all prospective shamans. One cannot simply show up with questionable lineage and sketchy experience and start performing ceremony. And the shaman at Ken and Sun’s retreat is every bit the real deal. Combined with their incredibly fair prices (hundreds of dollars less than comparable Peru retreats), the excellent diet and cuisine….lovingly prepared by Ken’s remarkable better half, Sun…the comfort and serenity of their home to gather one’s self between ceremonies…well, our choice was clear.
This is not a one-sized fits all event. Ayahuasca is intense and should be approached with the greatest of respect and intention. The shaman, Alberto, recommended a much stronger dose for my first session than is typically offered, and my experience reflected that added intensity. But his decision was based upon my medical history and lingering concerns. I can assure you that Alberto’s medicine and guided, healing expertise have answered any remaining health questions (both physical and emotional) that I carried with me into that choza. He literally drew the poisons from my body. And my remaining “tumor” is a simple cyst, already scheduled for removal. The physical body is healed, but the spiritual effects remain a powerful force in my life. I am eternally grateful that we chose Ken and Sun as our hosts, and Alberto as our Medicine Man.
One final note, if you can find some time to spend in Banos, either on the way to Macas, or on your return….it offers an Ecuadorian experience like no other. Best of luck on your journey.

July 9, 2018 at 9:44 amSun and Ken made sure I had an amazing time and a wonderful experience in Dec 2017. Their guidance made a big difference for my first experience with Mother Aya. Their house location is lovely and 5-10min walk to the river, which is a good location to relax after each ceremony. The Vegan food prepared by Sun was delicious.
Hassan and Ana were also very helpful and important part of this amazing experience.
The chosa is clean, cozy and located in a wonderful location near a roaring river.
Highly recommended.
