How Ayahuasca Heals
Popularly known around the world as a shamanic gateway to the spirit world, Ayahuasca has traditionally been used for thousands of years as a healing medicine also. Made using two indigenous plants Banisteriopsis caapi & Psychotria viridis, Ayahuasca works by promoting massive mental and physical healing responses in the human body.
While different for everybody, no one is ever not deeply affected by Ayahuasca. In like regard, few if any people ever come away from an Ayahuasca ceremony not feeling more spiritually and vitally restored than they did before arriving.
How San Pedro Heals
A lesser-known but no less effective healing plant is a cactus called San Pedro. Like Ayahuasca, it has been utilized by Shamans for many thousands of years in shamanic healing ceremonies, and there have been numerous reports of its healing power for cancer, diabetes, and paralysis, as well as for emotional and psychological problems such as depression and grief.
The Biblical Saint Peter, whom the plant was named after, is said to be the holder of the keys to Heaven, and so the name represents an opening of a gateway for us to enter into a dimension where we can experience the world as divine.
Participants are said to be ‘set free from matter’ and ‘engage in flight through cosmic regions… transported across time and distance in a rapid and safe fashion’.
One shaman described its effects as “First, a dreamy state… then great visions, a clearing of all the faculties… then detachment, a type of visual force inclusive of the sixth sense, the telepathic state of transmitting oneself across time and matter, like a removal of thoughts to a distant dimension.”
In this way, San Pedro is said to remove our negative beliefs so the positive ones shine through and we can heal ourselves.

March 28, 2022 at 11:57 pmI received the call from Mother Ayahuasca and was searching for a safe retreat for my journey. I was super excited to learn about La Vida Divine which is the only BIPOC (Black, Indigenous and People of Color) & Queer-owned plant medicine retreat … I loved the idea of being around other people like me on my spiritual journey. But that wasn’t enough to sell me because I’m pretty skeptical by nature. I’d heard many stories about the Ayahuasca experience and wanted to make sure it was in safe place to be open and vulnerable. After doing some digging plus getting a good review from a trusted friend, I started the application process knowing I’d be in good hands.
I loved that they have a pre-application process where they asked my health history. I have a lot of allergies and it gave me great comfort to know that Jhoselyn is a former nurse.
I opted for the Concierge Package and was so happy I decided to pay the little bit extra to let them coordinate all the details like affordable housing in Quito (a place that didn’t show up in any search I’d done), the shuttle to Macas with a driver who know which restaurants served food we could eat on the Dieta, etc. It was delightful to have all of that taken care of. This feeling of being cared ABOUT and cared FOR continued throughout the entire retreat, and not just during the ceremonies when I literally could not take care of myself.
I feel extremely fortunate that the universe led me to La Vida Divine — a beautiful place with beautiful people. I would recommend this retreat without hesitation, especially if you are BIPOC and/or queer. It was a deeply meaningful and healing experience for me.

November 19, 2021 at 7:23 amI am a sexual abuse survivor and a domestic violence survivor. I have struggled with alcoholism, I have had suicide ideation among other struggles, it’s been a difficult 34 years. The past 8 years I have been researching Ayahausca and San Pedro as another option in my healing journey. When I found La Vida Divine, it finally clicked, it was the place I knew I would be safe and taken care of. Also it’s in Ecuador where I always felt was home, it’s also the place where my trauma started and it’s where I wanted to find peace with it. I have done a lot of work on myself for past 12 years but my mothers death caused some of my trauma to resurface while having a father who declined rapidly after her loss. This year I was blessed with a son and having him around me has brought up subconscious things which at times would not allow me to enjoy him. After months of depression and being medicated nothing was helping me, I didn’t see any light at the end of tunnel and somehow the universe started shifted things for me. It paved the way for me to finally have the courage to try plant medicine. I have been wanting to try my ancestors way of healing through using Pachamama (Mother Earth). At La Vida Divine I allowed myself to surrender to plant medicine, allowed myself to be vulnerable. My experience with Plant Medicine has been life changing, I no longer feel hopeless, plant medicine has taught me that I actually don’t want to die, I want live, I have every reason to live. I want to live for my son, wife, sis, dad and most importantly myself. I leave my old self here in the Amazon. I am no longer my old self, I leave here as Yamanua the name given to me by the Shuar tribe. I look forward to all the work I will continue to do for myself and this will not be the last time. I am thankful for Jhoselyn, Gaddy, Jamie, Savio, Lucy, Elizabeth the Shuar community.
On a final note Jhoselyn and Gaddy are awesome. They will make you feel like you are right at home. The work they are doing for is magnificent.

November 16, 2021 at 12:06 pmAs a first timer, I was really looking for a retreat that would feel authentic, safe and supportive. I’m grateful to have found La Vida Divine when I did. As a Black woman, I was especially drawn to this retreat because it’s run by two women of color who are intentional about cultivating a healing space for some of the most marginalized communities. Jhoselyn, Gaddy, Savio, Jaime and the rest of the team have created a space that feels like you’re healing with family.
My highlights:
– the intimate size of the retreats (my retreat was only 2 people, max I think is 6) makes it feel less like it’s a business and more like healing with a community highly knowledgeable on traditional medicines and healing rituals. Savio, the shaman, brings with him many years of experience and provides so much necessary guidance before, during and after ceremonies. Jhoselyn sat with us before our first ceremony, explained how ceremony would work and shared her wisdom and learnings from her years of working with the medicine. I found that to be extremely helpful in calming my nerves before my first ceremony.
– As an introvert, I like my alone time. Both Gaddy and Jhoselyn were so great at balancing being present for me and allowing me to do me. We had movement classes, integration sessions and plenty of downtime if you want to explore the city.
– the food was delicious and the accommodations were great
– the choza were ceremony takes place is beautiful, situated right on the river so you can hear the water during ceremonies which brought a calming energy.
I truly cannot wait to return and bring people back with me.

July 1, 2021 at 6:44 pmThe time and experience I spent at La Vida Divine Retreat was lovingly memorable. My best friend and I settled on this retreat center for the reason that its women owned and zones in on BIPOC + LGBTQ healing. Jhoselyn, the head of the retreat was a warm, attentive and knowledgeable host. She took time to make us feel comfortable, created insightful exercises to do together after breakfast and was a joy to be around. Despite being in the process of remodeling the house and surroundings, the rooms + place was clean and equipped with everything needed. There wasn’t much to do at the house or in the area but after starting the on / off cycle of ceremonies (3 aya treatments + 1 San Pedro ), my friend and I were too tired to do much in-between. The remainder of the staff – Ximena, Jevon, Adolfo, Luci etc were kind and professional. Food was delicious and creative – always looked forward to the meals. The Shaman appointed had a great depth of experience that showed when sharing his story and info about the Shura people, tribe and traditions. He was able to answer all of my questions thoroughly and guided me through the ayahuasca journey along with help from the staff. I understood that each persons experience in healing is different but I was a little disappointed i had zero visual visions during ceremonies. It was introspective more than anything else for my friend and I. Ending the retreat with San Pedro was definitely the highlight. San Pedro was one of the most beautiful experiences I can’t even manage to put into words. Overall – I felt safe to be, share and heal at this retreat – Despite not having vivid visuals I gained worthy takeaways and still learned more about myself than ever before. It’s definitely worth recommending, especially to BIPOC or LGBTQ folks.

May 22, 2021 at 12:05 pmI loved my retreat with La Vida Divine! It was my first Ayahuasca retreat and I stayed for the full length that involved 3 Ayahuasca treatments and 1 San Pedro.
The things that stood out to me:
– I got to stay at the retreat leaders’ house and felt like I was part of their family.
– The food followed the dietary guidelines but was absouletly delicious (when we did not have to fast for the ceremonies).
– The location/hut for the treatments is absolutely gorgeous, right by the river.
– The shaman appeared to be the “real deal:” generations of tradition and experience, coming from the Shuar people.
– Jhoselyn has extensive experience with plant medicine and facilitation of these events. She sang during the treatments along with the shaman. What both co-created together felt deep and resulted in a space that allowed for deep transformation.
– Our retreat was small which allowed for deep connection and friendship with facilitators and participants.
Thanks La Vida Divine! – I love my new life and appreciate the memories and friendship.
