How Ayahuasca Heals

Popularly known around the world as a shamanic gateway to the spirit world, Ayahuasca has traditionally been used for thousands of years as a healing medicine also. Made using two indigenous plants Banisteriopsis caapi & Psychotria viridis, Ayahuasca works by promoting massive mental and physical healing responses in the human body.

While different for everybody, no one is ever not deeply affected by Ayahuasca. In like regard, few if any people ever come away from an Ayahuasca ceremony not feeling more spiritually and vitally restored than they did before arriving.

How San Pedro Heals

A lesser-known but no less effective healing plant is a cactus called San Pedro. Like Ayahuasca, it has been utilized by Shamans for many thousands of years in shamanic healing ceremonies, and there have been numerous reports of its healing power for cancer, diabetes, and paralysis, as well as for emotional and psychological problems such as depression and grief.

The Biblical Saint Peter, whom the plant was named after, is said to be the holder of the keys to Heaven, and so the name represents an opening of a gateway for us to enter into a dimension where we can experience the world as divine.

Participants are said to be ‘set free from matter’ and ‘engage in flight through cosmic regions… transported across time and distance in a rapid and safe fashion’.

One shaman described its effects as “First, a dreamy state… then great visions, a clearing of all the faculties… then detachment, a type of visual force inclusive of the sixth sense, the telepathic state of transmitting oneself across time and matter, like a removal of thoughts to a distant dimension.”

In this way, San Pedro is said to remove our negative beliefs so the positive ones shine through and we can heal ourselves.

    Concerned Doctor does NOT recommend!

I would like to begin by saying I have never written a bad review for any product, service nor person. I usually prefer to keep my opinions to myself if they are not positive, learn from them and move on. However, I am a doctor, involved in the alternative healing arts since 1995 and I simply cannot let my voice be muted under these circumstances, given the significance of what I have to share.
I had the experience of just over 2 months of exposure to Ayahuasca in Ecuador (AIE) in the beginning part of 2017. The following are a list of scenarios, events and dynamics that I observed first hand, or discussed with those who did experience things first hand.

-I witnessed the staff of non-native English speaking ‘sitters’ or facilitators struggle with communicating. There is usually one native English speaking person present, with two non-natives. If the number of clients that participate in the ceremony is greater than 3-4, that one native speaker is stretched beyond his capacity to be there fully for any one person. That means that the remainder of the people present have to attempt to translate what the non-native person is trying to say, while under the influence of a hallucinogen. If one is having a pleasant experience, that is probably just fine. If things take a turn, however, that is unnecessary stress placed upon the client that could escalate whatever situation they find themselves within. There are times when this one native speaker is on vacation, as well, which means potentially, there is no one present who is capable of speaking English fluently.

-It was my experience, as well as that of several people I spoke with, that there was not a single question posed by AIE about the clients’ current state of health. Not a single inquiry about whether or not we read the link at the bottom of one of their website pages about what to do/not do prior and after the ceremony, including whether or not we were on any medications that may be a life threatening mixture with Ayahuasca. Given the seriousness of the medicine, this could be interpreted by many as irresponsibility bordering on negligence.

-I was told that my initial email to AIE was a collection of the most questions that they had ever received. As a doctor, a responsible consumer and a naturally inquisitive person, I put a lot of time into trying to gather the most information as I could prior to committing to a group of people that I would entrust with my physical, chemical and emotional well being for the duration of my ceremony experience, and beyond, as it would relate to Ayahuasca. Each of my questions were answered to my current satisfaction, so I made my reservations.
However, when I arrived, almost nothing was as it was portrayed in the emails I received. This was true to such an extent that the site for the ceremony was literally a construction site. This was also true to such an extent that the one other person with whom I was doing the ceremony with demanded his money back the very next day, saying “This place is a s&%# hole.” I agreed, yet was determined to make the best of the situation. I also paid full price for much less than full amenities as described without question.

-As several weeks passed and I observed how things were done there, I realized that the marketing information that was posted online each month was simply not true. There was no yoga, no meditation, nor any breathwork offered nor were there any English speaking people available in this town of 6-8 expats that were qualified to offer any of the above. Speaking as someone who survived a near-fatal yoga injury, the person you want instructing you during any kind of class while under the lingering effects of mind altering medicine is a professional, preferably with lots of experience in dealing with clients’ deep, body opening situations. Anyone other than an experienced yoga teacher/breathworker/meditation instructor guiding classes is dangerous, in my opinion. Advertising said services when they are not actually available eroded my trust in AIE.

-I witnessed first hand multiple ‘lies of omission’ that occurred between the business partners themselves.

    – On a more practical note, they have cats (and likely dogs too) that are infested with fleas that sleep on all of the beds that they rent, in their two locations. Best case scenario, you go home with some cat hair and maybe a suitcase stained with cat urine, as happened once; worse case, you return home with fleas.

I am not happy to have witnessed what I have, nor to spend any time putting this in writing. My remaining silent could be potentially harmful and as someone who once pledged to first, do no harm, this was simply unacceptable. It is my opinion as a doctor and as a former client that this facility is ill equipped to be hosting Ayahuasca ceremonies and in fact, is an “accident” waiting to happen.

Wow. All I will say is I hope you judge us by the other reviews. I refuse to get personal except to say Grace is no doctor and does have issues. I encourage anyone who would like to discuss any questions or concerns to email me or call me on my U.S. number (904) 435-7994 or in Ecuador 099 368 8463. Ken Johnson ,owner.

The retreat owners, Ken and Sun, and their staff are fantastic people. They are grounded, warm, and open-minded individuals who are easy to get along with. Getting to know them was a treat in and of itself and I am grateful that I had the opportunity to meet such loving people! From the first session, I was well taken care of by Sun and she did so much for me during my stay. I realized during my stay that they are running this retreat to truly help people and that is why I give this place 5 stars.

    Accommodation:
You either stay in their house or the house across the street and they are both very comfortable western style homes. You’ll get your own room with a comfortable bed and a private bathroom. You will get hot water in the showers but you’ll need your own toiletries. Both houses have western style kitchens, dining rooms, and living rooms so it doesn’t feel like you’re in the rainforest. If you prefer roughing it, this place may be too comfortable but it was perfect for me because I wanted a safe space to relax after each session.

    Food:
Sun serves home-cooked meals and fresh juice/ herbal tea throughout your stay and it is just… delicious! For a foodie like me, it was one of the best parts about staying in this retreat. It was fulfilling and nourishing because it tasted great but also because a lot of the ingredients were fresh super foods. (Also, if you like fruits, you’ll love their breakfasts!)

    Location and wildlife:
The location is a lovely place in so many ways. Ken and Sun’s house is not far from the central part of Macas but they live just far enough to be surrounded by the wilderness. There is a great view of a river and volcano from their huge yard with lots of exotic plants and trees. This setting was also very rewarding.
Another great perk about the setting was that there were barely any mosquitoes. So the concerns I had with disease carrying mosquitoes disappeared very quickly. (The retreat location is high enough in latitude that such mosquitoes cannot fly up there.) There weren’t any unfriendly/ aggressive wildlife either so I was able to enjoy the lush, colorful scenery and the warm weather without any anxiety whatsoever.

    Shaman and the medicine:
The shaman was a lovely man who was certified and experienced. He always gave out good vibes and remained professional, even when he got sick during our stay. Sometimes his older children came with him to the ceremony to participate and that created a warm, friendly atmosphere.
He started each ceremony by giving us a speech, wishing us a good night and sending gratitude to the environment. He sung, whistled, and played instruments masterfully with great timing throughout the night– and this helped me stay in/ get back in to the light.
His brew has a great psychedelic kick with manageable physical strain (so it encouraged less purging compared to other brews). Although the effects of the medicine may vary from person to person, it had a profound effect on me. It was very effective in my healing process and I have gained a lot of insight through the experience.
Unlike some retreats, you will be resting throughout the night after you drink ayahuasca, so there will be no time to chitchat until the next day. Since you get a pretty hefty dose, this was not a problem for anyone in my group and it made for a more intense psychedelic journey.

    Cost efficiency:
So was this worth the cost? Definitely.

It is worth much more than what you’re paying for and I would absolutely go back again. This experience made me a fan of the retreat and its people (and their dogs). Personally, I will go back for the profound conversations, the amazing food, and the tropical wilderness of Macas.

Ken and Sun have a lot of love and wisdom to share with the world and you’re missing out if you haven’t stayed with them yet. I recommend a long stay so you can get to know them more and take some time to reflect on yourself and your life. So if you think you’re in need of healing, look no further. Go enjoy your time at ‘Ayahuasca in Ecuador’!

If I could rate this any higher, I would in a heart beat.

My experience with Ken & Sun was INCREDIBLE. Touch as touching and transformative trip. Scheduling was easy, communication was consistent and informative. Ken & Sun live in Macas, a sleepy town in Ecuador and your retreat experience is just out of town on a river. Accommodations at their home were comfortable and loving. High quality and delicious food is provided during entire stay. The yard in the house has a clear view of a volcano, spectacular.

The ceremony is authentic and facilitated by nationally recognized Shamans. My experience could not have been any better. Sun is magic. She provides unique guidance and support during your ceremonies and is truly there for you. Her heart is ginormous and you would be lucky to work with her.

If you are considering an authentic, transformative ayahuasca experience look no further than Ken and Sun. YOU CANT GO WRONG!

    The Short

    Pros
    • Small, intimate ceremonies
    • Excellent accommodations
    • Individualized attention
    • Great hospitality
    • Reasonable price

    Cons
    • More low-key than some other retreats
    • Style of ceremony may differ than others

    Date: August 14th-24th
What we did: 4 ayahuasca ceremonies, 1 san pedro ceremony
Attending: myself, my wife, 2 friends, 3-4 strangers

    Long Version
We just returned from Ken and Sun’s retreat. Though a bit off the beaten path, their location was excellent. Simply put, the retreat was not that different from a homestay, where several guests stayed in Ken and Sun’s house, while my wife, friends, and I stayed in a similar house across the street. The view was amazing and a great way to wake up everyday. The temperature when we attended was much more comfortable than I expected, and it only rained a few times while we were there. Insects & mosquitoes were also a concern, however none of us even saw that many mosquitoes while we were there. Macas, Ecuador is a great location for such a retreat.

The ceremonies were pretty low-key, which I thought worked well, especially given this was my first experience with ayahuasca. Basically, once you drink your cup there is a lot of quiet time, so you end up sitting with your own thoughts a lot, which might make some sessions difficult. Unfortunately for us, the shaman wasn’t feeling well, so we had fewer icaros than usual (he’s only human after all…). One or two people in our group commented that they preferred the ceremonies with more energy; multiple shamans, several dozen people, and a more socialized ceremony. Others remarked that our ceremonies, with less noise and more quiet self-reflection time, was much more relaxing (zero mixing of energies during the ayahuasca ceremonies). Take your pick, but this style worked for me, especially since our san pedro ceremony more than made up for any possible lack of energy. The location of the chosa was also a great one, full of its own natural energy. So if you’re sensitive to the natural environment around you, this is your place; nestled in dense foliage near a flowing river that you can pitch your negative energy into helped keep my journey on track. The facilities at the chosa were clean, not many insects, and the staff were courteous, calm, and helpful. My wife got personal care from Sun herself, so any issues I had about safety were quickly washed away.

The best and most important part about this retreat, the thing that makes it 5 stars for me, is Ken and Sun themselves. Ken and Sun have a certain calmness about them that really shines through in everything they do. They are genuine “salt-of-the-earth” kind of people; when things got rough, they were consistently reliable when I needed someone to talk to or lean on and share an experience with. Sun assisted during most ceremonies, and made herself available to anyone who needed her help, in particular the females in attendance. Due to their characters, they’ve managed to attract several high-caliber people who assist in supporting what they do, whether its during the ceremonies or taking a day trip to a spa/resort/waterfall/market/etc. Even the food they served us was amazing!

Overall, I highly recommend their retreat. I’ve never felt more refreshed and satisfied from an experience like this. It was truly a life-changing experience that you can’t get anywhere else!

My wife, my adult daughter, and I spent four days with Ken and his lovely wife, Sun. I can’t imagine more support from Ken and Sun while we stayed at their comfortable bed & breakfast, which is also their home. All meals were provided, and the food was delicious, clean, and energetically appropriate for ayahuasca. Ken and Sun are cheerful, caring, and enthusiastic in their support. Better hosts simply don’t exist in my experience!

Also, I believe having spiritual/energetic support from the experienced shamans Ken employs for the ceremonies and to manage the subtle environment of the “chosa” (traditional place for ceremony) is essential. The shaman makes the medicine used in the ceremonies. Also, with prayers of thanks and supplication for good energy, the shaman also clears negative energies, which made my experience, while intense, truly transformative, physically, mentally, and on a much more subtle level.

Being in nature, in the rain forest, with the shaman and under Sun’s and two other assistants’ watchful eyes, made the experience of this aspect of Shuar culture safe and powerful. I highly recommend Ayahuasca In Ecuador. When I return, I look forward to experiencing San Pedro in addition to Ayahuasca.

Thank you again, Ken and Sun! Blessings!
