Learn More About the Medicines

What is Ayahuasca?

“Ayahuasca” is the Quechua word for both the vine (Banisteriopsis caapi) and the sacred tea made from it, traditionally combined with Chacruna leaves. It contains harmine, harmaline, and tetrahydroharmine. Used by Amazonian tribes for centuries, it opens portals to emotional and spiritual healing. Our vine grows on the property, and we prepare the medicine in the traditional way.

What is San Pedro?

San Pedro (Trichocereus pachanoi) is a sacred cactus native to the Andes of Ecuador. It carries masculine energy and helps us open our hearts and expand our connection with all life. We also grow this cactus on the land, and ceremonies are done with great reverence.

What is Kambo?

Kambo is a powerful healing ritual that uses the secretion of the giant monkey frog (Phyllomedusa bicolor). Applied through small burns on the skin, Kambo detoxifies the body, boosts the immune system, and clears emotional blocks. It’s used for deep physical and energetic purification.

Your Healing Begins Here

I just returned from my 10 day trip to Awakenings Ayahuasca and I already miss my time there and want to go back and stay longer. The location was amazing, the Tsachila community was very welcoming and caring, the food was delicious, the pets were fun to play with, and the ceremonies were healing.

I have participated in ceremonies in other countries and with other tribes but this was like no other! I have never been included so deeply in learning about the lives, customs, traditions, and the way of life of the Tsachila indigneous community. We were really deeply involved and were even able to participate in preparing one of the ayahuasca brews! This is something I have never encountered anywhere and will forever cherish.

In between ceremonies we did things I couldn’t have imagined at other places. We hiked trails and visited 8 waterfalls and swam in some, we rode bicycles and fed hummingbirds by hand, we went to a family member’s farmland and picked fresh fruit, and we even walked through a protected part of the jungle in the middle of the city and were able to stand inside of a huge hollow tree that was overtaken by the vines that fed from it. We even visited the local school and brought gifts and supplies to the children and brightened their day.

The shaman Manuel is the nicest and happiest person I have ever met. He always had a smile on his face and loved teaching us about the Tsachila way of life. His personal care for the guests went above and beyond both during the ceremonies and outside of them. The music was beautiful and mystical and takes you to a deeper part of your medicine healing. We learned so much about plant medicine from him and his brothers which show the true depth of their knowledge and how much they want to help people.

The shaman Juan is unmatched. He not only guided us through ceremonies, he spent long amounts of time with us day and night teaching us about their culture, rituals, and ceremonies and participated in all of the activities. He personally took interest in all of our personal journies and guided us through the temazcals, limpias, and knew what each of us needed for our personal growth and kindly guided us through them. I have never had such personal interaction with a knowledgeable shaman that felt like a brother watching over me.

Tiwi seemed like a long lost friend that always had a smile on his face and was eager to facilitate the temazcals and renaissance baths and make us feel welcome. He has a peaceful nature that assures you that you are in good hands.

Fernanda and her daughter Nuri are the kindest and sweetest people on the planet and so much fun to talk to and joke with. Fernanda’s cooking is very tasty and all of the meals were made with love for the guests. She even guided us through preparing a traditional fish dinner that was delicious. Anything we needed was handled with care and made our stay feel very welcomed.

Stephani’s English/Spanish translation made communication even that much smoother for those that don’t speak Spanish and she was always very involved in the day to day activities to ensure we were in good hands. Even before the trip began, she was already very helpful in making all the arrangements as smooth as possible. During and even after the trip, her help never ended.

The group I was with felt like family and we bonded and shared many laughs, excursions, and good times together. We couldn’t have had a better group on this trip and the vibes were always positive. I came for the ayahuasca and personal development and ended up getting so much more than I expected and it was the best trip I have ever taken. I feel like I am part of the Tsachila family now and want to return soon. I am proud to not only call them my friends, they have become my family.

I would recommend Awakenings Ayahuasca for anyone seeking plant medicine, wanting learning more about the Tsachila community, learning more about yourself, and to feel a part of something bigger. To my new family, I love all of you, I miss you, and I will be back as soon as I can. Thank you for such a magical experience!

The people at Awakenings Ayahuasca Retreat are like no other. They stay true to the ayahuasca and you are even a part of the preparation prior to your ceremony. The Shamans are so attentive and truly want the best outcome for you. If you are looking to heal mentally, physically, spiritually then this is the place for you!! Along with the ayahuasca ceremonies, there are many other activities to partake in. A particular favorite is hiking up the cascadas (waterfalls). You will get to know everyone there as family. I literally got teary eyed when it was time to leave.

Yesterday i returned from my 3 days retraite at Awakenings Ayahuasca and I can say that it was the best decision of my traveling’s. I was at first not sure what to expect because it was my first time and also because you hear allot of places who make use of the people who are interested in this kind of retraites but this place is everything but that. They take such good care of you and you feel (even only stay for a short stay) at home here.

Next to the Ayahuasca you do many activities to learn more about yourself and your spiritual side and the community, the people, the culture and explore the nature around. I wished I could stayed longer but unfortunately I did not had the time for it.

I learned so much and I am super excited to keep on learning after this experience. I had such a great connection with my shaman Juan, even in ways i was not sure if it was real or not but it was. And that made it even more special. He helped me so much in this process and he will forever have a special part in me but so does the rest of the Awakings family. So thank you for everything Juan and all the others who helped me with all your nolegde, all the kindness, warmth, honesty and good energy you shared with me. I hope I will have the opportunity to come back and meet you all again!

Take care and the best wishes.

My time at Awakenings Ayahuasca is something that will stay with me for as long as I live, and ayahuasca is really just a part of that experience. I came for 3 nights and ended up staying 7, participating in three ayahuasca ceremonies. This was my first time taking ayahuasca, and I would never even consider taking it anywhere else after my time here, though I will return.

First of all, this is an indigenous Tsachila family of five generations of shamans who make and administer ayahuasca in the traditional way and understand it better than anyone. They take safety very seriously and are some of the only people actually qualified to be dealing with ayahuasca.

Secondly, a shaman should be more than just a person that gives you ayahuasca, but should be a presence during your time and truly be your advocate and coach. This is exactly what you will find with the shamans at Awakenings. Juan is my shaman, and he is an extremely perceptive, caring, and positive guy. His incredible care for me and the other guests made me feel capable and worthy of the self-improvement and self-discovery that I came to make. He is a true healer. I will forever be grateful to Juan, who I now consider a dear friend.

The rest of the family you will find to be lovely. From Manuel, the elder shaman, to Tiwi, the specialist in temazcal and other plant medicines, to Fernanda and Stefani, you will feel very much at home. For those that don’t speak Spanish, Stefani speaks perfect English and is a phenomenal translator. Fernanda cooks really well, and her and Tiwi’s daughter Nury is adorable. The pets were also a ton of fun. This group is a loving bunch and just a good vibe all around. The other guests during my time were also fantastic and there was no divide between family and guests.

Aside from this, the non-ayahuasca activities were phenomenal. We spent time with the local Tsachila community, went on some amazing hikes, did temazcal (sweat lodge), spiritual cleansing, reiki, massages, spent time outside, and learned about Tsachila culture and history, among other things. I have been traveling for eight months in Latin America and this was one of my most culturally impactful experiences throughout my travels. I could’ve spent the week here without taking ayahuasca and it still would’ve been a highlight of my trip.

All said, I came for the ayahuasca, but I stayed for everything else. If you have the calling to take ayahuasca, this is the place for it, whether you are a veteran or first-timer. Sending all my love to my Tsachila family and I’m excited to see you again soon.

I chose this location because I desired an authentic experience and wanted to be submersed in culture. Juan and his team are very caring and knowledgeable. The path towards self improvement is not easy, however they are eager to equip you with tools to aid the journey. I was comfortable and well taken care of. If you are researching places to attend I would encourage you to look here. I cannot imagine a more caring group of people. I arrived a stranger but left a family member.
