Medicine and Ceremony

At Awakenings, we work with authentic ancestral medicines and offer the opportunity to participate in the preparation of Ayahuasca and San Pedro; allowing you to deposit your energy and intentions from the very beginning.

Our healing team includes:

• 4 experienced male Tsáchila shamans

• 1 female Tsáchila shaman (available upon request)

These are four generations of wisdom, born into the sacred path of medicine.

What is Ayahuasca?

“Ayahuasca” is the Quechua word for both the vine (Banisteriopsis caapi) and the sacred tea made from it, traditionally combined with Chacruna leaves. It contains harmine, harmaline, and tetrahydroharmine. Used by Amazonian tribes for centuries, it opens portals to emotional and spiritual healing. Our vine grows on the property, and we prepare the medicine in the traditional way.

What is San Pedro?

San Pedro (Trichocereus pachanoi) is a sacred cactus native to the Andes of Ecuador. It carries masculine energy and helps us open our hearts and expand our connection with all life. We also grow this cactus on the land, and ceremonies are done with great reverence.

What is Kambo?

Kambo is a powerful healing ritual that uses the secretion of the giant monkey frog (Phyllomedusa bicolor). Applied through small burns on the skin, Kambo detoxifies the body, boosts the immune system, and clears emotional blocks. It’s used for deep physical and energetic purification.

It’s hard to put into words the gratitude that I feel toward Manuel, Juan, Augusto, Stefanie, Tiwi, Jonathan, Fernanda, and everyone at Awakenings Ayahuasca Retreat. I just got back from spending a week with them and experienced first-hand their true conviction of purpose: to help people through their experience and generational knowledge of plant medicines. They guided me though 5 days of holistic cleansing, awakening and reprogramming, including 3 ayahuasca ceremonies, kambo and rapé cleansing, therapeutic massage, reiki, and cultural immersion. The fact that I speak nearly no Spanish was no problem thanks to Stefanie’s translation.

When I first arrived, I was tired, stressed, anxious, and uncomfortably self-conscious. I had trouble allowing myself to be present. Juan helped me get past that, to be present, and to allow myself to receive their care. With that help, and with great intentionality as to what I was seeking from the medicine, I finally learned how to receive a higher love with gratitude, how to embrace myself as a person, and truly internalized how important it is for me to care for and love myself.

The safe, caring environment that Awakenings Ayahuasca Retreat has cultivated was an instrumental part of my ability to let go and be present through the week. It’s not the most luxurious resort from a “creature comforts” standpoint, but if authenticity is what you seek from your experience with a shaman/healer both in terms of expertise and intentions, I can’t imagine anyplace better.

We visited the Awakenings Ayahuasca Retreat in October 2023 (during our Wanderbus tour through Ecuador) and had an amazing and uncomparable experience. We took part in the natural sauna/steam bath in the middle of a beautiful forest and in the cleansing ritual. Both were very unique moments that we will never forget. The community was very welcoming and kind and we are already planning our next visit to the retreat.

Sehr schöne wahre Geschichte eines indigenen Abenteuers, wunderbare, professionelle, herzliche Medizinschamanen der Tsáchilas-Familie, es sind sehr starke Seelen, die man erschaffen kann.

My husband and I did a 7 day Ayahuasca Retreat at Awakenings Ayahuasca in the Tsa’Chila villiage.
It was beyond amazing! Juan was filled with knowledge, wisdom, energy and a spirit that was so beautiful. Stephanie translated everything wonderfully into English so we didn’t miss a thing.
The ayahuasca was pure and the visioning produced was so clear!
Kambo was done by another healer was also very eye opening and healings.
Each day was filled with tons to do or time to relax if wanted.
Hikes to waterfalls, ceremonial washings in the river, in the temple at the alter, steam rooms (hut), readings, reiki, massages, cigar and egg readings, touring the museum, personal healings, training of healing plants, preparation of the ayahuasca and so much more….
We are committed for life to revisit again and again for a spiritual boost. And for spiritual guidance and training!

I had a great time there, I got lots of cleansing and when I came back home I feelt lots of energy, more calm, Stefanie was very kind and help me a lot specialy translatwe. with translation I will highly recommend awaking ayuvasca retreat.
