My experiences working with Camino Al Sol have been transformational in many ways. It is a warm and welcoming community that provides a safe space to heal, learn and grow. My first retreat was of so much help to my life that I’ve partaken in several others and every one of them has been different (this is what I personally felt called to do…once is enough for a shift and may be all you need/want). Through working with Camino Al Sol, I have been able to heal wounds (some of which stemmed back to five years of age) and found true forgiveness for the person that I felt hurt me and my family the most. Not only was I able to forgive, I was grateful. I was so moved by my new found clarity that I contacted the person and told him that I forgive him and that I love him. The significance of this moment can not be captured in words. I harbored so much resentment, much of which I wasn’t consciously aware was still there, that I never pictured myself making a phone call to express those sentiments of love, forgiveness and gratitude. Even more, I truly forgave myself. This type of deep healing allowed for the healing of many other “smaller” issues. I felt as if we were able to get to the core rather than trying to work on all of the surface issues that may have simply been byproducts of the first. Either way, the healing has been multi-faceted as it has worked on the mental, physical, emotional and spiritual levels.
In addition to healing, I have learned and grown in ways that I could not have previously imagined. With the assistance of Camino Al Sol on my path, the discovery of my own inner truth has become more and more apparent. And this has shown me how to live more meaningfully and enjoy every aspect of life from work, to family and friends, to relationships, to Being. The information that has been shared and the healing facilitated through working with the medicine has been nothing short of incredible. I also want to reiterate how appreciative I am that Camino Al Sol is so warm and welcoming to all, regardless of background or beliefs. I have met people from all walks of life through this community and I am the better for it. Love and peace come to mind as a central theme.
Whatever you are searching for…healing, a community, a stronger connection, answers, love, guidance, WHATEVER! Allow Camino Al Sol to help and support you as they have with me and so many others. This is truly a game changer. A life marker. A before and after, if you will. With infinite love and gratitude for this community and beyond! Y para siempre…I love you all!

I first encountered Camino al Sol in August 2018, when I attended a retreat in Southern California. The experience with the group was so positive that less than a month after this retreat, I accepted their invitation to visit Columbia, and traveled with them for 18 days to visit the elders of their community and do ceremonies in the jungles of Putomayo, the mountains above Medellin, and the jungles of Santander. Below is my more detailed review of this incredible community.

Disambiguation: Fundacion Camino al Sol (a.k.a Camino al Sol), is actually the formal name given to the Carare community’s outreach efforts in North America. It is also associated with their retreat center in Santa Elena, above Medellin. Elsewhere within Colombia, the community members are known simply as practitioners in the traditions of the Carare community under the leadership of Taita Orlando Gaitan. For some reason, on this site, there are two separate listings for Fundacion Camino al Sol and Camino al Sol: but these are the same folks.

I had been waiting for the right opportunity to work with ayahuasca for literally twenty years (ever since reading The Cosmic Serpent, by Jeremy Narby, in college), and I felt strongly that it was NOT something to chase after, and I would wait until it came to me in the appropriate way. This group was first recommended to me by two close and trusted friends who had worked with them earlier in the year. Their ceremonies in the US are now being held at a site in SoCal that is already sacred to me, where I have been attending retreats and doing deep transformational work for years. Taking this as the sign I was waiting for, I signed up for the full length of their US stay in August 2018, which encompassed 7 nights of ceremony across 10 nights, total (essentially, 3 separately held retreats, all back to back). This was a profound and, as it turns out, very courageous way to meet the medicine, but was exactly the right move for me. I do not necessarily recommend that other first-timers consider attending so many nights of ceremony at once – my wife and I were the only 2 people to do so – UNLESS you take it quite seriously, and do all the necessary preparations – follow the strict dieta, learn as much as possible (Highly recommend these 2 books: Ayahuasca: Soul Medicine of the Jungle, by Javier Reguiero, and The Ayahuasca Test Pilots Handbook, by Chris Kilham)., and, at the same time, drop all expectations, hopes and fears, and enter the ceremony with as much equilibrium as possible. It also helps if you have some kind of meditation experience, because the context of mindfulness, awareness and spaciousness, or just a background of working skillfully with your own mind, greatly helps to navigate the profound experiences of the medicine. I don’t think I could have handled these 7 nights so well if it weren’t for the groundwork of more than12 years of meditation and study I’ve done.

Now, as for the close-knit team that is Camino al Sol: Samuel, Martine, Diego, Andrea, and Camilo – they are family to one another, and now, are family to me. They are all beautiful, careful and caring, a cohort of genuine, dedicated, and expert shamans (though they would not necessarily use this term themselves – because they would say, for example, that after as many as 27 years of walking this path, they are still learning its ways!). These five people are specifically responsible for bringing the plant medicines of the Carare tradition to North America, and they hold all the Camino al Sol retreats in the US and Mexico. Samuel is the main holder of the retreat center in Santa Elena (he lives there), and the others all hold the ceremonies there with him. The wisdom, knowledge and experience of this group can be traced to their main Taita, as well as directly to their elders in Putomayo, several of whom I was introduced to when they brought a group of us to Colombia in September.

Through the ceremonies of the circle of word that would precede drinking the cups each night, and in the morning gatherings after breakfast, Samuel and Martine would freely answer whatever questions that any of us had, offering context, perspective, and useful teachings to help us assimilate our experiences, enlarge our understanding of the plants as both medicine and teacher, and, to generally support us on our continued personal journeys of healing.

Healing is, after all, at the center of this. While of course occasionally people show up who are just looking to ‘try’ ayahuasca, or have an ‘epic trip,’ they quickly find out that it is far more profound than that. As Andrea explained to me, the medicine works first by healing ourselves, then by healing our family, and finally, extending that healing into the world. It is deep work, it is very hard work, and it is also beautiful work. I cannot imagine undertaking it with any other group. The container they create is impeccable.

In Colombia the next month, my experience (again) exceeded every expectation, shattered every concept, accomplished more healing, integration, and transformation than I have encountered through any modality prior, and left me planning to return soon and often. I will be back to the next US retreat in November, and am clear that ayahuasca is a newly integral part of my own journey of spiritual healing and growth. I am so grateful to have found this community to heal and grow with.

One finla note: there is a huge difference between medication (what we are used to in the West, whether through prescription or self-medicating), and true medicine. Ayahuasca is the latter. It is a profound paradigm shift to reverse supposedly ‘incurable’ conditions through a medicine that can actually rewrite the biology of your mind and body, and I wish everyone could have the strength and circumstances to experience it, at least once. Especially with the community and team of Camino al Sol!

TL;DR: These people are the real deal, offering a supportive, open, welcoming and safe environment for the messy work of true inner healing to take place. Both at their US retreats and in traveling with them for ceremonies throughout Colombia, I was cared for and supported exquisitely. Highly recommend, with no reservations, for anyone looking to encounter and work with the sacred plant medicines in a scrupulous form, with greatest respect and rootedness in the traditions of the Carare community of Colombia.

My first ceremony with Camino al Sol was in February 2018 in Southern California. My initial takeaway from that experience was the feelings of appreciation for the male and female shamans who provided an amazing space for us to experience the wonders of yage (ayahuasca) in a loving, supported, and professional environment. I felt that Camion al Sol was adhering to the ethics, teachings, and traditions of their elders. That ancient culture came through strongly every time one of them led a ‘weaving of the word’ that precedes the ceremony, during the after ceremony review the next day when we can ask questions about the experience in general terms, and whenever I asked them a question during a one on one talk. The loving kindness, competence, and care shown to all participants during my now thirty ceremonies with this group has never varied. Their thrust is to share the medicine with the world and to help everyone interested in starting a relationship with the remedy to do so in a wonderful, safe, environment. Their prices are among the lowest I’ve found. You can just about fly roundtrip to Colombia and have a three day ceremony for not much more than doing it in the US.
I have had ceremonies with other groups and I have yet to find anyone whose level of care and support meets that of Camino al Sol. For me, I always know that what ever might happen during a ceremony, that the shamans have my back with the experience to help me should any issues arise.
The shamans are always very approachable, you may ask any questions about the ceremony or the remedy. They follow the traditions of the Carare tribe and their elders strictly, without trying variations out without first having them approved by the Taita. This ensures that the experience is much as it has been safely engaged for thousands of years.
The music played by the shamans and members of the Carare family is magical! Designed to help your experience of the medicine during the ceremony, afterwards the musicians usually play until daybreak and the quality is very high with a number of professional musicians attending the ceremonies and playing afterwards.
i just returned from a ten day trip to the Amazon Basin of Colombia with the shamans to visit three Taitas (elders) in the region. I can’t say enough after visiting these elders and having them perform healing therapies and ceremonies for us. We then spent a week in Santander in eastern Colombia at the home of Taita Orlando, the head of the Carare’s. The ceremonies there and to be able to help clean the yage vines and make mambe under supervision are experiences I will never forget and helped to deepen my connection with the medicines. Camino al Sol is the real deal and are serious about providing safe ceremonies in the tradition of their elders. Highest recommendations!

I recently spent a weekend with Camino al Sol in Santa Elena Colombia. I have nothing but positive things to say. I was welcomed and felt the experience I was provided could not have been any better. I was scared to drink yage, but I was made to feel comfortable by everyone involved. The experience also felt authentic, and there were many locals that were involved as well. It was also very affordable. We did 3 ceremonies in 3 days, each of which was different for me. It was obvious that the people involved in this truly care about what they are doing. I felt liked I was invited into their family.

    Highly recommended.

This review is solely based on the experience I had with Jo and her team.

What can I truly say to even express my gratitude towards Jo and her husband, the Colombian elders (Martin, Samuel, Diego, Andrea, Camilo, and Natalia), and Caitriona/Michelle.
I had heard about ayahuasca about a year ago from a coworker but didn’t have the urge to truly experience the plant medicine until recently. A couple months ago I was at a crossroads with my corporate job that was creating intense anxiety and nervousness while harboring a lot of negative emotions I had built up over the years. At first I was pretty apprehensive since I had never experienced aya before even though I am familiar with other plant medicines. I did a ton of research on reddit and youtube on the plant medicine but still was unsure. However, speaking with Jo on the phone relieved any kind of hesitation or fear, she has AMAZING energy and is so loving/nurturing/knowledgable/positive etc. hence the reason why her nickname is Jo Mama; she really takes the time to take care of everyone’s individual needs or concerns and I am so blessed to have met her. I attended the first weekend of the retreat not knowing what I was getting myself into (plus I was going by myself) and before the first ceremony I was so nervous that I was shaking and scared out of my mind. Jo completely calmed me down, shared her own personal story with me and reminded me that I just need to BREATHE. The whole experience would not have been so amazing without the help of every single person there. I faced my fears, tackled many personal obstacles I had within me and came out a much stronger person. The elders provided incredible knowledge and support throughout the retreat and I felt nothing but unconditional love not just from the elders but also from the other people attending the retreat. Their music is so healing and awesome! Throughout the weekend we had amazing vegan food (thank you Henry), which I’m normally not a fan of and since the retreat I have gone vegan not just by choice but the plant medicine basically rewired my body in a way that I now enjoy a plant based diet. My past addictions to Taco Bell and juicy steaks are no longer which is crazy to me!! I came back for the second weekend however my cycle started and when that happens, you cannot attend ceremony because when women are on their cycle their energy is so powerful and may negatively affect the rest of the group (so plan accordingly).

This retreat has been absolutely life changing for me. What I described is only a fraction of the amazing adventure I encountered. My relationship with my parents is the strongest its ever been and I wake up every day feeling blessed and grateful. My anxiety has gone down tremendously and I notice that I am more patient and loving towards others. It’s like the darkness I had in my life is now gone and I live my life with so much light. And that is just from one retreat! I look forward to the next retreat Jo and her team are putting together and will definitely be going to Colombia with this group in the future. Not only did I leave this retreat a better version of myself but I also gained a wonderful family. I love you all!!

    Heyyyyyyyyyy!

I have taken part in doing the Ayahuasca with Camino Al Sol for 3 days in Santa Elena Colombia. I must start by saying that this experience and meeting the community has just been such a blessing and an eye opener that I will cherish for the rest of my life!

At the beginning I was so apprehensive about drinking the Yage as this was my first time and how the whole ceremony would unfold for 3 days! However, immediatly once we arrived, I felt an overwhelming power of love, tranquility, guidance and support.

Everybody that organised and have also took part in the ceremony including the Shamans were fully experienced, incredibly knowledgable and wise which contributed in me feeling safe and as part of a family! Everything was perfectly well explained each step at a time and support were given if we were unsure about anything.

From ‘the circle of words’ which enabled all of us to share and talk about deep subjects that enlightened our knowledge and understanding of the Yage and it’s purposes, to drinking the Yage and later enjoying the amazing live music in the ceremonial hut, to sitting down around the fire, having a massage with a trained and spiritual leader that connected with you on a deep level, to taking part in making the plants for the ceremony, those moments and the opportunity given to be part of something and people so amazingly beautiful in every way, I cannot be any more grateful to have done this experience with Camino Al Sol.

The price I paid to take part in doing the Ayahuasca with this beautiful community that welcomed us with wide open arms into their house and heart, was honestly so cheap which I was very surprised about considering I have lacked of nothing and gained so much more during my 3 days stay, also considering this community sharing their time, effort, wisdom, but most importantly their abundance of love which was so apparent to anyone to feel right away!

This medicine is sacred and is a tool to open a path within yourself that you feel has been a calling. I went to Camino Al Sol not knowing what to expect but have heard of people having done it in the past as well as personal research. I was scared yes, but at the same time I knew O had a calling somehow, I went therefore open minded and with my heart. I was guided and supported by the community which made my journey a life changing experience!

Thank you Camino Al Sol with all my heart! I cannot recommend them enough and if I were to do it again, I will not hesitate to do it with Camino Al Sol again!

I started attending retreats with Camino al Sol about two years ago… when I think back at where I was in my life then, and where I am now… it’s like I’m two different people. I arrived at my first retreat with many issues that I wanted and needed to address… and a tremendous fear as this was my first experience with ayahuasca and this organization.

By the end of the weekend, I felt like I was reborn and that I had met a long last family in Camino al Sol. Over the following two years I have attended retreats in both the United States and Colombia with them, and they have always been there for me, not just for the ceremonies and for healing, but also for friendship and community.

My life has completely turned around for the better, and I owe a great debt of gratitude to this group. If you are considering participating in an ayahuasca ceremony and you have an opportunity to do so with Camino al Sol, this will be one of the greatest experiences of your life.

    With much love,

    George

Amazing group of people. Wonderful, positive energy. They have helped me clearly distinguish the difference between energies and how to embrace and protect the beautiful light that is within and all around us. The name “Camino al Sol” (Path to the Sun) explains it all. Thank you for your guidance, beautiful Yage, and the people of Camino al Sol!
