It’s been a few years since I went, and I waited a while to write a review just to make sure I put exactly what needs to be said. I will start by saying I had a powerful life changing experience here. The reason I advise people to stay away from this facility is as follows.
The “Red Dog” policy. Basically each participant is encouraged to report any discussion they overhear about any questions or criticisms about the retreat or staff. This is classic cult tactics, and the leader Christine exhibits all of the signs of a spiritual narcissist.
They will just criticize you for saying you are not all love/light because you have questions or concerns. Other retreat centers I have been to are exactly the opposite, and encourage discussion of all aspects of the experience, fully supporting people through what is a difficult experience rather than blaming them for how they might feel at any point.
It’s really hard to tell where the bullshit ends and the truth begins. Christine will say “Let me tell you how to deal with an evil spirit if you encounter it…” and then within two minutes “There is actually no such thing as an evil spirit.” There are in fact such things as evil spirits, but the shamans are responsible for maintaining a safe container, but you will get no such informed discussion.
The shamans do not stay on the property and just come in to get paid to do the ceremony and leave. You will have minimal if any interaction with them outside of ceremony.
There is very high turnover in staff and shamans. Literally nobody who worked there when I went a few years ago is still an employee or a shaman. There is a reason.
I question whether they may be even using ceremonies to feed on the energy of the participants. I was not able to function normally for a year. I have been to numerous other facilities to drink ayahuasca and had no such complications.
